Handmade at Amazon
Handmade goods ecommerce site Etsy is facing tough competition in the wake of the announcement of Handmade at Amazon. Just like Etsy, Handmade at Amazon is a digital space where artisans can sell their crafts to the public. In addition to the nearly universal brand recognition, Handmade at Amazon will launch with over 80,000 items, 600 of which will initially be eligible for Prime shipping.
OH, and:
- A following of 250 million customers all over the world
- Full email and phone support
- Multiple website templates and pages
- No barrier to entry (it's free for anyone to market!) and no expiration date on items
Unlike Etsy however, Amazon does collect a modest referral fee based on your product. Amazon will charge merchants 12% per item sold and a monthly fee for $40 for merchants who sell over 40 items per month. Etsy takes a 3.5% transaction fee on the items that are sold.
Handmade at Amazon is going to be a huge asset to craft sellers. In order to sell on their site, you must apply to be a seller and your work must be classified as “handmade.” Each seller gets to create their own page about themselves and showcasing their work. These pages are custom to each seller and reflects them and their product. Amazon is opening new doors and making it easier to make your at home craft production into a international force.
